Preventive maintenance for your bicycle

Like all mechanical contraptions, your bicycle is vulnerable to wear caused by regular use and exposure to the elements. Routine preventive maintenance will keep your bike in good condition and safe for riding throughout the year. Although some bicycle repair and maintenance is best performed by a qualified bicycle mechanic should be able to do routine maintenance with some basic tools. Here are some things you can do to keep your bike in perfect condition.

Wheels

Check the tire pressure to ensure that inflate with appropriate specifications. Consult the manual or the sidewall of the tire to learn about the range of acceptable pressures for your tires. Note the openings or fatigue marks on the wall or the tread. Inspect the rim for dents, twists or kinks. Rotation of each wheel to make sure that is true and stays focused. If the wheel wobbles from side to side when turning, then the focus needs. Check if some spokes need to be replaced or tightened. If your bike is equipped with mechanisms quick release, make sure they are properly secured.

Steering

The handlebars, saddle and pedals must be securely fastened. Check the height the handlebar stem. Make sure the handlebar stem and seat post are set so that their minimum insertion marks are not exposed. Handlebars should be firm and in line with the front wheel. Check the handlebars and front fork is well stabilized. You should be able to rotate the handlebar post freely in the fork ahead. Tighten the screws that hold the pedal arms for the front bearing. The pedals should be firm, non-binding. Check for slack in the front bearings and the receiver.

Brakes

Squeeze both brake levers and try to ride the bike to check if the brakes are working properly. If the bike is moving, while the brave levers are pressed or the brake levers touch the handlebar, then the brakes are very weak and needs some adjustments. Make sure wires Brake taut. Check the brake cable for breaks or frayed ends, brake cable replace any worn or frayed. When the brakes are applied, the tablets Brake (shoes) should contact the rim squarely and do not touch the tire or the spokes.

Chain

Keep your chain clean and motor properly lubricated. Use a rag soaked in degreaser to remove dirt and grease buildup. Make sure that the chain moves smoothly without sticking or jumping.
