Airlines continue to spread wings on Mexico

Airlines are responding to increased U.S. demand and Canada for Service to Mexico by widening service options to the country for many destinations. With greater access by air carriers to contribute boost international tourist arrivals.

Over the past six months, a mixture of the major airlines and low cost airlines in the United States and Canada have increased hours of service to different parts of Mexico through additional frequencies of existing routes and launching new services.

"That airlines across the board are increasing flight options to Mexico demonstrates the high degree of confidence tourism industry has in our country, and travelers are interested in the discovery of Mexico for themselves. Mexicans are known worldwide for their warmth and hospitality, and American travelers will be welcomed with open arms, "said Magdalena Carral, CEO of the Mexico Tourism Board.

The expansion of air transport of entry into Mexico is aligned with the objective of the integral of the Mexican government, the tourism plan long term to increase the number of visitors international. With 21.9 million visitors in 2005, the country ranks seventh international tourism destination according to World Tourism Organization figures released in June.

Among airlines increasing flights is Delta Air Lines. In recent months, the Atlanta-based company launched a new nonstop service to destinations in Mexico such as Acapulco, Merida, and Ixtapa from Atlanta; Mazatlan from Salt Lake City, and Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco from New York John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Frontier Airlines another company at the forefront to expand service to Mexico, has announced plans to launch roundtrip service between Denver and Guadalajara. The service marks the eighth city in Mexico to be served by the border. The four weekly flights to Guadalajara, scheduled for starting December 22 as part of the plans of the Denver-based Frontier to increase service to Mexico by 30 percent during the high season of winter break; Add frequencies Frontier flight from Denver to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas. Frontier announced it would begin new nonstop service between San Diego and Cancun with a weekly flight from December 16.

Other flights additions to existing routes include service by Alaska Airlines, which will lengthen its list of services to the Mexico resort cities this fall with six flights weekly from Los Angeles and San Francisco, thus increasing their capacity in Mexico by 22 percent. The company also plans to inaugurate nonstop service between Los Angeles and La Paz, San Francisco and Cancun and Seattle and Cancun, and between Portland, Oregon both Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta.

Sunwing Airlines plans' announced it will begin this fall to operate one flight each between Montreal and Ottawa to Acapulco Cancun on Wednesday and Friday. Earlier this year, Sunwing started service between Toronto and Cozumel and the airline will operate a Sudbury and Cancun route for the winter season from December to March 2007.

For the winter season, SunQuest Airlines will also begin services from Hamilton to Cancun and the Riviera Maya from December.

Mexican airlines also expand services
The largest number of routes expanded, however, has not been limited to international services. Mexican airlines, including low-cost airlines are also building services. Private airlines and semi-private, as Avolar, ABC Interjet and Volaris, company and Mexicana Click Mexicana have launched low-cost flights to different parts of Mexico. Aladia, one of the newest lines Mexico Airlines is scheduled to launch this summer.
