How can you update the directory on a Garmin GPS?

My mother got me a GPS for Christmas and I was very happy that you have not you with directions given to the Garmin, you can simply search for the company (target Chick-fil-A, etc.) However, many cases are more recent (5 years) are not in it. Can you update it somehow? Is it not strange that we buy this Christmas and buildings of 5 years is not it? It's like buying a computer and see WindowsMe. It's like weight *?
